Summary: As reported on March 4, 2025 by First Department, on December 5, 2023, geophysicist and archaeologist Andrey Veryanov was detained in Moscow on charges of treason. He is being held in the Lefortovo pretrial detention center while the investigation continues. However, the details of the detention are still unknown, and Veryanov probably has no relatives or friends.

Details: Veryanov lived and worked in Peru for over 20 years (his card is here), in 2019 he came to Russia to care for a close relative, and, as he himself put it, “got stuck” – first the pandemic, then the war. It is unknown why exactly he was detained, the case materials are classified. Apparently, for one of the protests against the invasion of Ukraine, the First Department reports. At the end of 2023 Mediazona reported that “on December 5, the Lefortovo District Court of Moscow remanded A.E. Veryanov in custody on treason charges (Article 275 of the Criminal Code),” but the journalists were unable to find out the name of the arrested man.
