Summary: The Russian Ministry of Justice has added the German Society for East European Studies (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Osteuropakunde) to the register of “undesirable” organizations. The German Society for East European Studies is one of the largest associations of German researchers of the Eastern region, according to the organization’s website. The foundation’s activities are financed by the German Federal Foreign Office.
Details: Legislation on “undesirable” organizations has been in effect in Russia since 2015. Being included in the register of “undesirable” organizations means that the organization is prohibited from operating in the country, and Russian citizens are prohibited from cooperating with it under threat of criminal prosecution. As of March 31, the Ministry of Justice register contains a total of more than 150 undesirable organizations.
